-MSUL a registered cooperative society, deeply committed to empowerment of women especially the underprivileged,. It was formed in the year1971 as result of a plan to rehabilitate illiterate and unskilled women thrown out of employment from textile mills without notice. On seeing their pathetic condition, Smt. Sushila Adivarekar, the then President of Mahila congress and Smt. Kanta Shrishrimal decided to start a society to help women in distress.
-Maharashtra Sahakari Udyogini Limited (MSUL) was born with Smt. Sushila Adivarekar as the Founder President and Smt. Kantaben Shrishrimal and Smt. Asha Toraskar as vice presidents. The main objectives of MSUL was to Empower Women by making them economically independent . MSUL was registered under the Maharastra State Co-operative Societies Registration Act bearing No. BOM-BRD-(1)222-1972.
-Encouraged by their maiden attempt to rehabilitate 1500 unskilled textile women worker by giving them reeling contract in various textile mills, the Managing Committee of MSUL embarked upon newer activities in order to generate employment for women by setting up milk distributing centres, sewing classes, bakery training, diamond polishing and selling grocery items, onion, potatoes at cheap rates in slums. It also started conducting family planning and health check up camps.
-As an immediate step to achieve their objective, MSUL committee approached Shri Narendra Tidake, then Minister of Labour & Textile Industries to provide employment to these women. He not only promised jobs on a contract basis in the six mills under Maharashtra Govt. but also provided them with a shelter in the Mills Compound, for Bad Bottom cleaning- removing fibres for recycling . 1500 women were rehabilitated.
-Encouraged by the positive result of these projects, MSUL undertook their second biggest programme to open “Amrapali”, the working women’s hostel at Tilak Nagar in Chembur . The hostel was inaugurated in the year 1974.
-This was followed by the third project “Savali” the working class women”s hostel at Juhu JVPD scheme near Cooper hospital. This was on a contract basis with MAVIM for a period of 3 years.
-In Sep. 2001, MSUL was allotted a plot next to “Amrapali” working women’s hostel by the then Revenue minister Shri Ashok chavan and MSUL undertook various social activities apart from expansion of the “Amrapali” hostel using this plot..
-We are truly blessed & consider a privilege to continue the noble work started by Sushilaben Adiverekar way back in 1971 & to support all women's causes.
-MSUL is not only about running a women’s hostel but also developing the self-esteem and knowledge of women and girls by giving them the time and space to express themselves, developing their personality through different talks by eminent people, that have been held on health, nutrition, help them in seeking legal assistance and make them aware of women’s rights. We conduct Yoga Classes, Counselling, Celebrate Women’s day, which in turn helps them continue in life with a different frame of mind; one that isn’t just expecting to live monotonously. Women’s security is one more indicator for women’s empowerment which we have undertaken.
-In our mind, the purpose of MSUL is to enable Women to develop to their full potential, intellectually and spiritually. They have to be empowered to pursue self-knowledge and the skills that will help them be of service to their fellow human beings.
-MSUL is a Women-Centric non profit organization. Women Empowerment is our fundamental component. The dedication, contribution to various projects & volunteering time of members of MSUL to the cause proves that working together can cause a social change.
